Environmental Portraiture - Digital Photography

This second unit we explored a genre of photography I never really understood until now.

As the brief explains, this genre is used in a wide range of contexts such as documentary, advertising, magazines and in art galleries. In other words, it is seen everywhere that a single image of this genre can communicate ain intricate message. It also speaks about the environment of the subject, it can create a dialog of what consists outside the image, therefore commenting on the way society is viewed.

As with any other project it takes me a bit of time to come up with a well-defined project idea but as soon as I settled on it I knew it would be interesting to photograph. I decided on photographing my friend, Robyn back home in Swansea, she has 9 dogs and most of them are Pomeranians as well as one pug and one white husky with different coloured eyes! The environment where I was going to photograph them was in their house such as the living room, bedroom and kitchen; anywhere where they felt comfortable and was allowed to photograph them in. I also went on a walk with them in Penllager Woods which was very interesting to photograph.

I really enjoyed this project, considering the fact I was quite hesitant on the idea at first but after viewing my photos I am very pleased with them. They capture the environment and subjects well and the colour pallete is well thought out in the photos.
